Reference photo's & geometry captures for Kitchen Scene.

The kitchen was based on my parents kitchen (pictured below).

I started the kitchen by setting out polygon cubes to represent where the key items were going to be placed in the scene. The Fridge, dishwasher and cooker all started out as cubes.

I modeled the cabinets with more resolution so that they could be subdivided later. I created the cupboards through duplicating the cabinets, then manipulating them. When I subdivide anything I always add the original item to a hidden layer, so that I can easily go back and tweak my lowest base mesh if need be.

While getting to grips with subdivision, I originally had a problem with the cabinets using the geometry pictured below in Figure 1. Previewing them with Maya smooth looked good, but on subdividing the geometry would break up. I solved this problem by by getting rid of the triangles and correcting the problem. Figure 2 shows the geometry that I rendered with.

The Utensil involved basic polygon work.

For the curtains I created a profile curve and placed it at the top where the curtains would end. and then duplicated it down to the bottom where the curtains would start from. I scaled then scaled that lower curve in.

I lofted between the two curves to create the geometry and I added some isoparms in the middle to create folds in the material. I mirrored the curtain across to the other side and then adjusted them to look slightly different rather than symmetrical. The curtain pole was quick to do using a polygon cylinder. I added some extra resolution towards the end of the pole for extra detail, duplicated across and then subdivided.
